Unfortunately for Luke, I don’t take kindly to being told what to do, especially when the thing I’m being told to do is something I don’t want to do. Example being: staying away from Jasper. I have an apology to issue before we can go our separate ways, but I’ve been waiting to reach out to him because he hurt his arm and probably can’t text.

And, okay, I might also be waiting because I’m a little nervous. I mean, I got him hit by a car. I wouldn’t be so eager to forgive in his case, so maybe I’m just delaying the inevitable yell-fest I have coming for me. The last time I saw him, sure, he was friendly, but he was also not thinking clearly. I can’t allow myself any butterflies over what might have happened if his mother hadn’t interrupted. I didn’t earn what was going to happen. I was part of some drug-induced haze that he’s definitely come down from thanks to over-the-counter painkiller and time to wallow in his hatred.

And besides, I didn’t really want to kiss him—did I? It was just the moment.

Either way, I’ve been begging Benny for status updates on Jasper and one finally came in this morning, four days post-accident: Jasper back at work.

Not as detailed as I would have liked, and Benny didn’t answer me when I asked what time Jasper would be leaving, but I need to get this over with. Armed with a pan of homemade brownies with TRUCE? written in blue frosting left over from Astrid’s birthday, I make my way to Prologue.

I step into a nearly empty store. It’s quiet, except for the tinny sounds of music and gentle clicking coming from the front desk, where Benny hunches over the keyboard, typing. This visit feels so different from my last. I’m more nervous and I can’t even relish the lack of business properly because I’m too busy searching for Jasper, my heart hammering.

Benny looks up from the computer and spots me. “Here to get me nearly fired again?”

My body can only hold so much guilt. Maybe once I talk to Jasper, I can move on to Benny. Until then, though, I have little to no sympathy for the boy who grew up with me and should have seen my blatant attempt at sabotage coming before I even crossed the street.

“Is Jasper still here?”

Benny leans over the desk to peek into the pan. He smirks. “I’ll tell you for a brownie.”

I return his smirk. “They have nuts in them.” They definitely don’t.

His face falls. “You get him hit by a car and then you serve him disgusting brownies? Isn’t this supposed to be an apology?”

“Where is he, Benny?” My palms start sweating and I can’t blame the warm pan for it. I’m about to see Jasper, face my consequences, and lose fresh brownies. This is the worst day and I need to get it over with quickly.

“Fine. The break room.” He goes back to typing.

“And where’s that?”

“In the back.
